Fenerbahçe loses 1-0 to Ankaraspor

By: j | Comments Add Comments

Following last weeks debacle against Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe was in desperate need of a victory against Ankaraspor. However their response continued to disappoint as they put forth a unprofessional effort losing 1-0 and seriously jeopardizing hopes of Europa League berth. With Galatasaray victory over İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor on Sunday, the Yellow Canaries will find themselves three points behind their rivals in the final Europa League spot with six remaining matches.

If there is a consolation to the match it needs to be said that Luis Aragonés was hampered without upwards of six regulars from his starting eleven. That said, it will provide little solace if the Yellow Canaries are watching European football next year. Of notable exceptions to a poor match review, the return of Kâzım Kâzım to the starting eleven was seamless and he constantly provided attacking vision. In the first thirty minutes he provided Uğur Boral and Daniel Güiza clear opportunities to score but both chances, as the scoreline suggests, were fruitless. Oddly enough though he was likely the Yellow Canaries best man on the pitch up to the point he was pulled from the match thirteen minutes after the break for Gökhan Emreciksin. Opportunities came and went for Fenerbahçe in the second half but with sixteen minutes remaining the hosts, “Leoparlar” decided to make their chances. After intercepting a poor clearance by ‘keeper Volkan Demirel, the ball was dispatched to Mehmet Çakır who was completely unchallenged by either Gökhan Emreciksin or Önder Turacı before firing into the net from just outside the area. The dreadful shambolic piece of amateurish defending provided Ankaraspor the 1-0 lead and without further mark the win.

Fenerbahçe v Ankaraspor match preview

By: j | Comments Add Comments

With seven weeks remaining in the Süper Lig campaign Luis Aragonés Fenerbahçe side travel to Ankaraspor in desperate need of points. The disappointment of last weeks derby against Galatasaray was not limited to the disgusting conduct of the players but the Yellow Canaries pithy performance whereby they barely threatened the hosts goal. Level with points with Galatasaray in the final Europa League spot, Fenerbahçe is listing and showing little focus on trying to challenge Sivasspor or Beşiktaş for a Champions League berth and merely “holding on” till seasons end.

Returning to the Galatasaray debacle, the Türkiye Futbol Federasyonu (TFF) handed down a series of penalties including a five match ban for Diego Lugano and three each for both Volkan Demirel and Semih Şentürk to begin immediately. While the lengths of the harshness of the penalties are debatable as both Lugano and Şentürk could have been received much lengthier bans given they were the instigator of much of the events, the “business” reality of the situation is that Fenerbahçe will need to go through the stretch run with a number of difficult absences.

Luis Aragonés, who now many believe is a sure-thing now to return to Istanbul next year, will miss Gökhan Gönül, Abdülkadir Kayalı, Alex and Edu Dracena in addition to his suspended trio. Clearly selection will be a problem and hopefully will result in younger players, notably Kâzım Kâzım and İlhan Parlak being given greater opportunity. Aykut Kocaman’s “Leoparlar” are going through a dreadful run in which they have not won since the opening match in January and could be exactly what Fenerbahçe needs to revive their European hopes.

derby ends in violent, scoreless draw

By: j | Comments Add Comments

The pre-match buildup of great battle between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray failed to live up to expectations as the match concluded with a nil draw at Ali Sami Yen Stadium. However that said, while the draw left the Yellow Canaries a distant eight points behind Sivasspor the day will be remembered for endless series of poor challenges and a lengthy altercation near the matches conclusion.

Pushing aside the disciplinary problems for a moment, the overall mindset of Fenerbahçe heading into the match is a peculiar one to understand and like many issues of the campaign needs to be dissected later on. To head into a match against your heated rival, with season being on the line and then put forth a pithy fearful and undisciplined performance is dreadful. A victory would keep Fenerbahçe title hopes alive and with this in mind you would assume they would possess the claret to put “it” on the line. However they did not and instead offered little attacking vision and the entire match was relegated to denying Galatasaray a goal and a litany of tawdry challenges that are deserving of significant disciplinary action.

Sadly beyond the general run of play the match concluded with an absolute embarrassment for Süper Lig and needs to be dealt by regulatory bodies, swiftly and with the harshest of penalties. Early challenges of Emre Aşık on Robert Carlos and Selçuk Şahin on Harry Kewell should have been dealt with harsher by the referee Fırat Aydınus but unfortunately he did not and the great rivalry embarrassed itself.

Returning the match, once again attacking vision was complete ownership of Galatasaray on the day and only poor finishing and the work of Volkan Demirel saved the point. From the get-go Galatasaray with Milan Baroš provision to Harry Kewell not being closed out properly by the Australia international. Poor finishing by the hosts continued seven minutes later as Arda Turan’s splendid cross was headed wide by Milan Baroš. Moments later a poor clearance led to Harry Kewell attempting from a tight against but Volkan Demirel was up to the challenge. After a rash challenge on Robert Carlos, the match heated-up or should I say started in a spiral demise. With players jostling, handling each other a bit rough, the referee did not step-in and the misguided intensity led to the embarrassing conclusion of the day. Selçuk Şahin let his emotions spill over quickly thereafter, first on what can’t be described as a “challenge” on Mehmet Topal as he simply shoved the player over only to be followed up by a flying lunge at Harry Kewell. Drawing a yellow-card he immediately crowding the referee in a heated conversation and should have seen his day end right there and spared us his later discretion’s. A further incident occurred a few minutes later as tempers flared with Sabri Sarıoğlu grabbing Diego Lugano’s throat and the Uruguayan international deserving an early red-card for a series of provocations that eventually spilled over. The match continued with a number of threats mostly by the hosts but summarily the day won’t be remembered by the run of play but instead the brawl at the end.

The final stages which included Lugano’s head butt to Emre Aşık erupted into a long series of altercations that if not controlled by security would have erupted into a full scale riot. Emre Aşık, Arda Turan, Semih Şentürk and Diego Lugano were all red-carded and along with a few others as well as the clubs need to be dealt with harshly by Turkish Football Federation.

Fenerbahçe – Galatasaray derby

By: j | Comments Add Comments

If the famed Fenerbahçe – Galatasaray derby didn’t need more incentive other that being one of the worlds most intense rivalries, both clubs are slugging it out for a spot in Europe. With seven matches remaining in Süper Lig campaign, Beşiktaş has a narrow lead over Sivasspor (see below) and with both sides not showing any signs of letting-up not only is the chance for a Champions League berth slipping away but with Trabzonspor level in points, a loss could cost a Europa League spot.

As expected Ali Sami Yen will be “not-so” welcoming for Luis Aragonés side. Fenerbahçe has been very tight-lipped of match preparations and avoiding all those silly little details of injuries and tactical considerations it has instead provided ever so-important recounts of cake and ice-cream at Robert Carlos thirty-fifth birthday, rousing speeches from former players and fun-loving photos from practice sessions. While this naturally will keep every Fenerbahçe fan on the edge of their seat, or at least those who long to talk about the new kit, a morsel of information of the actual club might be something a professional media relations department should considered in the future given their worldwide reputation.

Of what little information is available and I might stress it is the most meager of servings, Alex is possibly out for the affair.

Fenerbahçe defeats Eskişehirspor 2-1

By: j | Comments Add Comments

Fenerbahçe returned from the international break with an affirming 2-1 victory over Eskişehirspor. With eight matches remaining in the Süper Lig campaign the Yellow Canaries are six points behind first place Sivasspor and turn their attention to next weeks heated battle against Galatasaray.

In a surprise late decision Turkish international Gökhan Gönül was able to pass the grade in a late fitness test and took his place in Luis Aragonés’s starting eleven, however Alex and Diego Lugano were still out. Opportunities before the break were modest to say the least as the Yellow Canaries were clearly troubled going forward, less risk defending. The few opportunities came and went with the match in a scoreless deadlock at the break. Forced to leave the match at the half, Edu Dracena was replaced by Yasin Çakmak who as chance would have it would save a goal early in the second half as he cleared a ball off the line. However opportunities were slowly dying out and with the loyal supporters of Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium becoming restless, the manager reached for Deniz Barış and Gökhan Emreciksin to replace Josico and Uğur Boral. Finally a minute before the hour mark Fenerbahçe broke the deadlock as Robert Carlos provided Deivid the ball into the box, to wish the former Sporting man made no mistake with. Leading 1-0 the Yellow Canaries seemed drawn in a shell, comfortable in the attack but concerned of going forward. Slowly Eskişehirspor crept back into the match and came with a fraction of leveling in the final ten minutes. However with three minutes remaining Semih Şentürk’s long provision to Daniel Güiza resulted in the Spanish international making it 2-0. The insurance goal was needed as just before regulation time concluded Batuhan Karadeniz, on-loan from Beşiktaş, redirected Stjepan Poljak’s from close range to make it 2-1. The visitors searched for the needed equalizer in added time but it was not to be and Fenerbahçe walked away with the 2-1 victory.

Fenerbahçe v Eskişehirspor match preview

By: j | Comments Add Comments

With the international break now over Fenerbahçe returns to Süper Lig action as Eskişehirspor visits Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium. Nestled fourth in the table, six points behind Sivasspor, Luis Aragonés’s Yellow Canaries, the reverse their disappointing play of late if they are win a spot in the Champions League.

While rumours swirl around the Fenerbahçe camp that a number of players are on their way out, including Robert Carlos, Diego Lugano and Daniel Güiza, many are assuming that Luis Aragonés will also exit this summer. This remains to be scene but that task at hand is finding a morsel of consistency in a year where the club rarely seems to be playing on the same page and completely commits to the former Spain managers strategy.

On the injury front, for the match Fenerbahçe will be without the services of Turkish international Gökhan Gönül, due to an injury in Fatih Terim’s side and as well as veteran Alex.

Fenerbahçe collapses late to lose to Bursaspor

By: j | Comments 1 Comment

In a highly physical match, Fenerbahçe collapsed late allowing two goals to lose 2-1 to Bursaspor in Süper Lig action. In conjunction with last weeks dreadful 1-1 draw to Kocaelispor, the Yellow Canaries have fallen a minimum of five points off first place Sivasspor and in danger of losing a spot in European competition.

Heading into the Bursapor tussle they knew they were facing a difficult task as the Bursa side have dropped only one match in the new year. With a top-shelf squad available for Luis Aragonés, excluding Alex, the Yellow Canaries opened the scoring four minutes in, albeit via a questionable offside call missed, as Uğur Boral provided Daniel Güiza the ball and the Spanish international sent the ball to the back of the net from inside the box. Fenerbahçe searched to the double the lead almost immediately and efforts from Semih Şentürk and Daniel Güiza near the half hour mark came within a whisper of scoring but each fell off-course. After the break the hosts, Bursaspor, began to attack with greater frequency and seemed on the verge of equalizing the match on numerous occasions. However each attempt was held at bay until four minutes remaining when Belarusian international and former Dinamo Moscow man Maksim Romaschenko’s cross into the box was sent in by Tuna Üzümcü. With the match now even, the home side thirsted for win and in the third minute of added time they found it as Gökçek Vederson was adjudged to bringing down the brilliant young striker Sercan Yıldırım in the area and the spot was pointed to. Buraspor ‘keeper Dimitar Ivankov strode up the pitch and quickly dispatched the ball past Volkan Demirel for the 2-1 victory.

Fenerbahçe misses chance with draw to Kocaelispor

By: j | Comments Add Comments

Fenerbahçe missed a perfect opportunity to advance in the table with 1-1 draw to Kocaelispor at Şükrü Saraçoğlu. Luis Aragonés jumped to quick lead only two minutes in as Robert Carlos connected with a powerful drive from a set-piece play. With the goal advantage the Yellow Canaries went forward thirsting for another strike but time after time the final touch was lacking. Deniz Barış missed a point-blank effort soon thereafter but slowly Fenerbahçe came unglued and the visitors were able to attack unmarked. Whilst Volkan Babacan put forth a yeoman effort, the wave of attack seemed endless and finally with only three minutes remaining Júlio César Moreira sprung free and pounded the ball in. Now level, Fenerbahçe went looking for the winner but “close” was all they could get and the match wound down to a disheartening 1-1 draw.

Fenerbahçe defeats Kayserispor 2-0 in efficient fashion

By: j | Comments 1 Comment

Fenerbahçe returned to Süper Lig action with an efficient 2-0 victory over Kayserispor 2-0. With the victory Luis Aragonés climb to fourth in the table, only three points behind Sivasspor. Once again Daniel Güiza started the match on the bench, in a move that will add further credence to speculation that his days in Istanbul are numbered. However after an early close call by the home side Semih Şentürk gave the Yellow Canaries the lead as he poached on a close range rebound. Two minutes prior to the half hour Alex’s powerful drive from long range found its way past Kayserispor ‘keeper Souleymanou Hamidou and Fenerbahçe had a confident 2-0 lead. While the Yellow Canaries were on their way to easy victory Volkan Demirel decided to foolishly lash out at Mehmet Topuz and rightfully received a straight red-card. Down a man, Volkan Babacan entered the match and took over goalkeeping duties for Fenerbahçe without allowing the home side to breach the goal.

Fenerbahçe advance in Türkiye Kupası defeating Sivasspor 3-1

By: j | Comments Add Comments

Fenerbahçe continued its good form over Sivasspor, winning 3-1 in the Türkiye Kupası at Şükrü Saracoğlu. After a well contained opening, the Yellow Canaries missed a golden chance to take the lead as Alex’s free kick struck the bar and came to Deniz Barış but the Turkish international sent the close range effort over the bar. Late efforts by Sivasspor should have given the visitors the lead but finishing was off-course, none worse than Mehmet Yıldız’s easy close that completely whiffed.

Eleven minutes after the break Luis Aragonés called upon Daniel Güiza and Edu Dracena for Uğur Boral and Önder Turacı respectively and the impact. Ten minutes later Deniz Barış accepted Deivid’s provision and powered the ball in from outside the box, giving the Yellow Canaries a 1-0 lead. Nine minutes later the lead was doubled as Alex’s in-swinging corner was sent near by Daniel Güiza, with Edu Dracena closing the ball out. However with eight minutes remaining Sivasspor brought the match within one as veteran (Fábio) Bilica nailed a free kick into the netting. Two minutes later Fenerbahçe sealed with win with Daniel Güiza and Deivid playing a slick one-two resulting in the Brazilian dispatching the ball into the net, bringing the match to a final 3-1 score.
