Trabzonspor holds Fenerbahçe to scoreless draw
By: j | January 25th, 2009
As expected the Fenerbahçe’s return to Süper Lig play after the break against Trabzonspor proved to be a insurmountable challenge as the host Yellow Canaries could not break through and the match concluded as a nil draw. With the draw Fenerbahçe maintains the fifth spot in the table, five points behind top of the table Sivasspor.
The match offered few incidents although it is easily said that Ersun Yanal’s Trabzonspor looked comfortable within Şükrü Saracoğlu and seemed to be more intent of the two clubs for the victory. Whether it was the winter break or the less than appealing temperatures, neither side lusted for the three points and seemed comfortable staying behind the ball. From a defending aspect the Yellow Canaries displayed good discipline but the counter was near invisible as Daniel Güiza efforts were dealt with sternly. To some surprise Luis Aragonés kept Kâzım Kâzım and Semih Sentürk out of the starting grid and it showed in the dowdy attacking spirit that barely provided a highlight excluding last minute assaults in which finishing was dreadfully lacking. For a team that qualified for the Champions League last year, they showed little fight and hopeful “not to lose” and “inspired to win.”
Fenerbahçe return to Süper Lig action against Gaziantepspor with a great deal of questions to be answered but mostly revolving around of where did their attacking spirit go.

I think Fenerbahçe will need to pick it up considerably if they are to climb into a Champions League spot. They still don’t play with the intensity they need to succeed and have been very slow to adjusting to Luis Aragonés system.
The Süper Lig is headed for an extraordinary finish with Sivasspor and Trabzonspor quite capable of holding off the likes of Galatasaray, Beşiktaş and the Yellow Canaries.
