If

“If” is the worst word any athlete or coach every utters. In most cases over the last three decades in this sport, when I hear “if” I know it comes from someone with “regrets.” At times those regrets are noteworthy and at other times they emit from those who did not possess the fortitude to put forth their best effort. While I walk about the razors edge of being curmudgeonly, I don’t mind telling I detest athletes and coaches who whimper about what they might have done “if” things had fallen their way.
Today you will hear of what might have happened for Fenerbahçe “if” things had fallen their way against Porto but simply, they did not. In front of their great fans, the Yellow Canaries put for a dreary effort in losing 2-1 to Porto in the Champions League. The loss rules out chances of advancing to the knockout stages and puts their sole hope in qualifying for the UEFA Cup.
Some will point out early missed opportunities by Fenerbahçe but I care little of those who clamour to “if.” The Yellow Canaries lost because they weren’t the better team and more succinctly didn’t put forth the never-say-die attitude that is deserving of those who call Sükrü Saraçoglu home. The visiting Porto side grabbed the lead with Lisandro López scoring at the eighteenth minute and adding his second ten minutes later with ‘keeper Volkan Demirel holding back additional charges. Fenerbahçe’s lone goal came from young Kâzım Kâzım, who consistently shows extraordinary heart, at the sixty-third minute. However efforts following to draw the match level were few and far between and Porto defeated Fenerbahçe 2-1 at the once great Sükrü Saraçoglu fortress.
Luis Aragonés must dispense with excuses and put-forth a squad committed to honouring Fenerbahçe as they face great-rivals Beşiktaş on Saturday in Süper Lig action.
