from bad to worse

I’m not sure how to break this to loyal Yellow Canary supporters but this is not the way you want to go into the Champions League. Fenerbahçe lost 2-1 to Hacettepe Spor Kulübü in Ankara today in a I-can’t-look-its-so-bad defensive nightmare. I’m not sure how else to say it but this is far too good of club to be making consistent mental errors. Losses such as these will not be made up during the year and will prove to be very costly.

Do to absences Luis Aragonés shifted tactic’s with Alex supporting Daniel Güiza as the lone striker and if you weren’t watching from the start of the match, you missed a superb offense flourish that showed extraordinary promise. While they were consistently knocking at the door all attacks had been squandered till Uğur Boral’s cross at the twenty minute mark was headed in at the twentieth minute mark. After that Fenerbahçe seemed to put the brakes on, or at least lacked the killer instinct to put Hacettepe away. After back and forth action and modest scoring opportunities, unmarked İbrahim Şahin scored from close range and the match was level before the half.

Without question that deflated Fenerbahçe and the match was ripe for the taking. Roughly thirty minutes before the end of regulation, an attacking cross by the home squad was nudged by Can Arat past Volkan Demirel to give Hacettepe the 2-1 lead. Fenerbahçe had countless opportunities to draw the match level and seemed to find a way not to finish properly, none probably worse then the bumbling of Alex’s corner near the eighty minute mark that Josico and Daniel Güiza couldn’t handle.

Whether it was fatigue from international duty or something unknown, this was a dreadful affair that you need to address. Finishing, the least of my worries is, well, now a major worry. But to add insult to the entire match, late into added time Volkan Demirel as yellow-carded twice, the second for disputing a call and is now out for the next match.

Fenerbahçe needs to react quickly with the Champions League starting next week against Porto.
