Fenerbahçe v Ankaraspor match preview
By: j | April 18th, 2009With seven weeks remaining in the Süper Lig campaign Luis Aragonés Fenerbahçe side travel to Ankaraspor in desperate need of points. The disappointment of last weeks derby against Galatasaray was not limited to the disgusting conduct of the players but the Yellow Canaries pithy performance whereby they barely threatened the hosts goal. Level with points with Galatasaray in the final Europa League spot, Fenerbahçe is listing and showing little focus on trying to challenge Sivasspor or Beşiktaş for a Champions League berth and merely “holding on” till seasons end.
Returning to the Galatasaray debacle, the Türkiye Futbol Federasyonu (TFF) handed down a series of penalties including a five match ban for Diego Lugano and three each for both Volkan Demirel and Semih Şentürk to begin immediately. While the lengths of the harshness of the penalties are debatable as both Lugano and Şentürk could have been received much lengthier bans given they were the instigator of much of the events, the “business” reality of the situation is that Fenerbahçe will need to go through the stretch run with a number of difficult absences.
Luis Aragonés, who now many believe is a sure-thing now to return to Istanbul next year, will miss Gökhan Gönül, Abdülkadir Kayalı, Alex and Edu Dracena in addition to his suspended trio. Clearly selection will be a problem and hopefully will result in younger players, notably Kâzım Kâzım and İlhan Parlak being given greater opportunity. Aykut Kocaman’s “Leoparlar” are going through a dreadful run in which they have not won since the opening match in January and could be exactly what Fenerbahçe needs to revive their European hopes.
