Fenerbahçe squeezes out 3-2 victory
By: j | October 18th, 2008In what could prove to be a defining moment of the season Fenerbahçe squeezed out a 3-2 victory over Kocaelispor with a Semih Şentürk goal six minutes into added-time. It was by no means an “easy victory” but if Champions are made through adversity, Luis Aragonés’ men answered the call.
The home side took the early lead when Taner Gülleri scored twenty-two minutes into the match and held fast the lead through the break. It wasn’t till nineteen minutes after the break that the Yellow Canaries were able to level the match with Daniel Güiza finding the back of the net. With a spur of inspiration, Uğur Boral gave Fenerbahçe the lead for the first time in the match only three minutes later but the home side was unrelenting as Nenad Jestrović leveled the match with thirteen minutes left in regulation. However with it looking dire and a draw in sight, Fenerbahçe poured forward with Semih Şentürk scored the winning goal deep into added time.
A victory of this magnitude, against all odds and with the team plagued with injuries cannot be underestimated. It must serve as the rallying cry for Fenerbahçe. The Yellow Canaries return to action in the Champions League when they welcome Arsenal to Şükrü Saracoğlu.
