Fenerbahçe responds with 7-0 defeat of Hacettepe

By: j | February 14th, 2009

Following last weeks dreary 2-0 loss to İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor, the situation around Fenerbahçe was looking bleak. The pressure circling Luis Aragonés was cresting and many were calling for the former Spain leader to step down. Urging patience, he stressed that the road to the championship is not a sprint but still critics remained.

While a single match is not a season, Fenerbahçe responded to criticism with a shocking 7-0 defeat of Hacettepe at Şükrü SaraçoÄŸlu. At no time did the visitors look in the match and the poor finishing, slow tempo that has plagued the Yellow Canaries this campaign vanished. Opportunities were closed out professionally, starting with Alex’ goals at the tenth and fourteenth minute to take a 2-0 lead but equally defending was fundamentally sound. With a chance to kill the match off with an additional goal, Fenerbahçe responded by taking the match to a shocking 5-0 lead before the break with Diego Lugano, Semih Åžentürk and Deivid de Souza adding their names to the score-sheet. Kâzım Kâzım and Gökhan Emreciksin came into the match within five minutes of the restart and both Semih Åžentürk and Alex added goals before the hour to bring the match to the shocking 7-0 final.

The decision now will be whether Daniel Güiza retains his place in the starting eleven next week. Its hard to argue with a seven goal out-pouring but that decision can wait. With victory Fenerbahçe draws level with Galatasaray in third place.

What a performance. Semih and Alex were both brillant. Volkan made some nice saves. Was unbelievable.
