Fenerbahçe overcome Beşiktaş 2-1

By: j | November 29th, 2008

Leading into todays affair, sitting sixth in the Süper Lig table, every match is of importance for Fenerbahçe but of-course the great derby against Beşiktaş needs no introduction. With the highly typical support of Şükrü Saraçoğlu behind them, the Yellow Canaries defeated Beşiktaş 2-1 in the match that will be remembered for quality mid-field play, intense passion and well-taken tactical play. Luis Aragonés approached this match with extraordinary secrecy and quite obviously turned-up the intensity and re-affirmed the need to tighten discipline. It is clearly evident that Fenerbahçe is taking the great leaders advice now more to heart as their defensive play is worlds ahead of what it was earlier in the campaign.

Selçuk Şahin opened the scoring eleven minutes into the match as he got the ball behind former Fenerbahçe fixture, now Black Eagle ‘keeper Rüştü Reçber. Where he so-often scored for the home-side, Mert Nobre drew the match even for Beşiktaş at the twenty-first minute but only six minutes later Daniel Güiza brought the fans to their feet with an brilliant goal. Beşiktaş opportunities were severely hampered with Édouard Cissé being excused four minutes before the break in a highly questionable call that should have been dealt differently by the officiating crew. However that set-back did not hold back the valiant the Black Eagles as they came very close to leveling the match after the break but the Fenerbahçe back-line and Volkan Demirel were up to the challenge. With the 2-1 lead, the tactical war between Luis Aragonés and Beşiktaş’ Mustafa Denizli was nothing short of brilliant as both sides could not mark the score-sheet again and good fortune fell the way of Fenerbahçe.

While I am the firm believer of “team victories” it is worth noting the continued growth of Kâzım Kâzım, particularly as rumours circle of many English clubs apparently after the services of the twenty-two year-old dynamo. It is an unfortunate by-product of his development but hopefully these efforts will be spurned. This is additionally a troubling situation for Fenerbahçe as they push forward in the domestic campaign as along with Kâzım Kâzım, similar comments are being made of Daniel Güiza surfacing in England during the January transfer season. I will keep you abreast of both situations but nothing can take away from todays great triumph.

Fenerbahçe
Volkan Demirel, Gökhan Gönül, Edu Dracena, Diego Lugano, Roberto Carlos, Kâzım Kâzım, Selçuk Şahin, Deivid (Ali Bilgin 83′), Uğur Boral (Vederson 69′), Alex(Josico 60′), Daniel Güiza

Beşiktaş
Rüştü Reçber, İbrahim Toraman, Tomáš Zápotočný (Filip Hološko dk. 71), Gökhan Zan, İbrahim Üzülmez, Tomáš Sivok, Édouard Cissé, Ekrem Dağ (Uğur İnceman dk. 84), Matias Delgado, Serdar Özkan, Mert Nobre(Bobô dk. 75)

j, thanks for the write-up. It was a hard-fought game, but I have to disagree with you about the intensity of the defensive effort. I thought it was nothing like what the team displayed against GS, and that was mainly because FB played with only Selcuk to guard the midfield instead of the successful Selcuk-Josico duo of the GS game. Until Cisse was thrown out (which I thought was a correct call) Besiktas actually was getting all the rebounds in the midfield. Luckily, they have a terrible defensive organization, which helped FB get many chances even before the red card.

Overall, I don’t think any team is really good this year. So, FB is still in it for the championship.

One last word about Kazim. He has huge potential. But he does not play for the team, he plays for himself. For his sake, he should be disciplined. He made many bad calls today, but one was really bad, where he chose to take a bad shot instead of passing in a 3-to-2 play. Same thing goes for Ugur. I hope with the injuries subsiding, both will sit on the bench for a little while.

Sporel – thank you so much and I respect your opinion certainly. I do agree with you regarding the Galatasaray match though.

With Kâzım Kâzım, I prefer to say he doesn’t understand ball distribution yet – (jajaja) but certainly there are weaknesses. However I appreciate his work-rate and think the drop-off without him is horrible.

Can I ask you on your general opinion, do you feel overall League wide defending is poor? I’ve been astonished at some play and if Daniel Güiza converted at a higher rate it would be incredible how many goals he would have.

Are you a Fenerbahçe fan or just general Football in Turkey? I’m always trying to write less of a biased report in order to respect all followers since only three clubs are represented.

j- Congrats on the win. Fener’s been beating Besiktas for the past 5 games in a row. With Trabzon also coming your way and Besiktas to vist the Ali Sami Yen, I predict the first half of the season will see Galatasray and Fener taking the first two spots.

j, I definitely think defending is the achilles heel of Turkish football. My opinion is that this is because of the poor fundamental education, or lack thereof. Defense is really about being disciplined and doing the right thing play after play. They dont’ know what the right thing is (poor football education) and they are not disciplined. Actually, teams that bring in good foreign players for their defense and achieve consistency over time with them generally do well in Turkish soccer. Examples abound: Uche-Hogh at FB, Popescu at GS, Zago-Ronaldo at Besiktas, Lugano-Edu at FB, Gotz-Stumpf at GS.

Also, I am a FB fan. Sporel is the name of a FB legend, actually. How about you? How did you come to be a FB fan (it sounds like you are not Turkish)?

Sporel – that is an interesting point regarding defending because I often wonder if the the lack of regional players to be honest. I also wish many of the older ties with Romania and other Balkan nations was stronger. That seems to have disappeared over the last 10-20 years but I’m hopeful it’ll happen sometime in the future.

Re fan – just wanted to make sure because of the name and whether you were just being nice – jajaja. You have no idea how many “not so nice” messages I get from people. Re lineage, part of my family traces back through Constantinople for centuries. However I want to express I try to write this blog not only as a fan for the club but as a unbiased supporter for all Turkish Football. I want people to understand the positive aspect of the sport and region and not simply see the inflammatory aspect that is typically shown. Does that make sense?

It definitely makes sense. And your perspective also shows in your write-ups. FB blog is clear of team bashing thanks to you and it should be!

Sporel – thank you my friend and I am glad you understand what is now a not-so hidden agenda : )

Seriously it has been an honour to join in with Musab’s Galatasaray blog and was very pleased to see Ozzy represent Beşiktaş. Hopefully through these blogs we can not only interest people in the game in Turkey but more importantly teach people about a beautiful section of the world.

So back to Football…do you prefer a more defending or attacking approach? I obviously lead to a more defending side but always interested in others opinions.
