Fenerbahçe humiliated in-front of loyal fans
By: j | October 21st, 2008Todays 5-2 loss to Arsenal in the Champions League wasn’t simply a “poor” display of Football but in-fact a humiliating defeat in front of loyal Fenerbahçe supporters at Şükrü Saracoğlus and will undoubtedly have a massive impact upon the direction of the club.
Barely a quarter way through the match, the Gunners had sliced and diced the Yellow Canaries defense apart for three goals, making them look amateurish at best. The fifteen match unbeaten streak in European competition feel quickly but not in a “tight match” but in a walk where the London club looked like it could score at-will. The Yellow Canaries defense, Robert Carlos in particular, not only looked painfully slow but unprepared a hosts and tactically mismatched. Truthfully long before the match concluded the rumour wire was buzzing that this match is “the final straw” in a disaster-filled campaign.
Arsenal opened up the scoring with two perfectly placed through balls straight up the gut in which they simply possessed too much pace for the Fenerbahçe defenders. Emmanuel Adebayor netted the first goal at the ten minute mark and within the next minute young Englander Theo Walcott bisected the defense and finished from a miraculous angle to give the Gunners a 2-0 advantage. Eight minutes later a Alex free-kick was played into the box from Daniel Güiza and erroneously plunked into the net as an own goal by Mikael Silvestre to bring the match to 2-1. However that was a close as it would get because Abou Diaby quickly returned Arsenal’s two goal margin as the beneficiary of some highly questionable defending and less than optimal ‘keeping by Volkan Demirel. Four minutes after the break Alexandre Song pounced on a loose ball in the six-yard box and it was 4-1 Arsenal to the whistles of the home squad. With twelve minutes remaining Daniel Güiza restored some pride with a consolation goal by young Wales international Aaron Ramsey made it 5-1 deep into added-time.
Fenerbahçe sits at the bottom of Group G with a single point and two behind Porto. They return to Süper Lig action this Saturday at home against Bursaspor.
