Fenerbahçe go softly into the Ukraine night

While Fenerbahçe’s performance in the Champions League had fallen far short of their goals much less be inspire confidence, with a victory over Dynamo Kyiv they would advance to the UEFA Cup. With the finals of the Cup at Şükrü Saracoğlu, Fenerbahçe supporters clung the notion of cheering their beloved side on the championship. However this notion fell very short as Luis Aragonés squad put-forth a vapid performance, not worthy of the crest they wear or the cheers their loyal fans rain down. Some will complain of the chill of the Ukraine night but victors fear little and this was a horrible performance when it mattered the most.
Recounting the match minute by minute or looking at the statistical analysis will not do justice to the lack of intent by Fenerbahçe. The match was effectively taken to them with a brilliant tactical plan by Dynamo Kyiv, which is no surprise given that they are led by a mastermind, Yuri Semin. The former Lokomotiv Moscow leader laid out a perfect plan and his forces kept to it. Dynamo took the lead twenty minutes after the start as Ukraine international laid out a perfect pass for up and comer Roman Eremenko to neatly slot in. From there opportunities were rare, albeit Dynamo could have added to the lead late but came up short. Finally as the fans Lobanovsky sung out “DYNAMO” the match ended with the home side victorious 1-0.
