Fenerbahçe drops points losing 1-0 to Gençlerbirliği

One of the oldest messages in coaching is to ensure that victories of the past are put aside and each day a club goes forward with focus and dedication. Apparently that was forgotten as following the stunning 7-0 defeat of Hacettepe, the Yellow Canaries put forth little intent against relegation-threatened Gençlerbirliği losing 1-0. With the defeat Fenerbahçe falls to fifth in the table and should Sivasspor defeat Eskişehirspor, they will be eight points behind the table leaders.
The one goal margin was in-fact flattering to Fenerbahçe as the score-line could have been much worse. Samet Aybaba’s side took the lead fourteen minutes in when Australian international Mile Jedinak redirected a free-kick into the net to the delight of the home support in Ankara. Although there was plenty of time to play, the Yellow Canaries were not able to break through the defending resolve of Gençlerbirliği and lost 1-0. While advancing opportunities were greatly limited as the home side was skilled at protecting the lead, the ease in which Fenerbahçe was most alarming as they clearly were not mentally prepared to fight for three points.
Fenerbahçe returns to play next Saturday as Sivasspor visits Şükrü Saracoğlu.
