Fenerbahçe’s quest for the Süper Lig championship took a major step forward as they defeated Sivasspor 4-2 at Şükrü Saracoğlu. With the victory the Yellow Canaries are now four in the table only five points behind the top spot. In selecting his starting eleven Luis Aragonés kept Daniel Güiza on the bench and paired Deivid with Semih Şentürk.
The fireworks started quick with the visitors taking a 1-0 lead only four minutes in as Turkish international Mehmet Yildiz headed in close range offering. However a motivated Fenerbahçe side canceled out that goal within a minute as Gökhan Gönül provided Uğur Boral a well-placed cross which he headed home for the first of his two goals. Oddly enough the theme of attacking success and a quick cancel would continue as six minutes before the half hour Murat Sözgelmez beat Volkan Demirel giving Sivasspor a 2-1 lead. Yet three minutes later Alex provided Semih Şentürk a long ball which he drove past ‘keeper Michael Petkovic to bring the match even again. The exhausting pace continued as seven minutes later the Yellow Canaries would have the lead for good as Alex once again was the playmaker, this time crossing to Uğur Boral to head in professionally. An enthusiastic Fenerbahçe continued to attack with vicious intent and kept Sivasspor on their heels. After the break Volkan Demirel’s heroics denied Mehmet Yildiz to maintain the lead but for the balance of the half Sivasspor could not launch an menacing attack into the final third. Finally with thirteen minutes Diego Lugano closed the match out with a point-blank effort to bring the match to a final 4-2 scoreline.
