Fenerbahçe defeats Eskişehirspor 2-1
By: j | April 5th, 2009Fenerbahçe returned from the international break with an affirming 2-1 victory over Eskişehirspor. With eight matches remaining in the Süper Lig campaign the Yellow Canaries are six points behind first place Sivasspor and turn their attention to next weeks heated battle against Galatasaray.
In a surprise late decision Turkish international Gökhan Gönül was able to pass the grade in a late fitness test and took his place in Luis Aragonés’s starting eleven, however Alex and Diego Lugano were still out. Opportunities before the break were modest to say the least as the Yellow Canaries were clearly troubled going forward, less risk defending. The few opportunities came and went with the match in a scoreless deadlock at the break. Forced to leave the match at the half, Edu Dracena was replaced by Yasin Çakmak who as chance would have it would save a goal early in the second half as he cleared a ball off the line. However opportunities were slowly dying out and with the loyal supporters of Şükrü SaracoÄŸlu Stadium becoming restless, the manager reached for Deniz Barış and Gökhan Emreciksin to replace Josico and UÄŸur Boral. Finally a minute before the hour mark Fenerbahçe broke the deadlock as Robert Carlos provided Deivid the ball into the box, to wish the former Sporting man made no mistake with. Leading 1-0 the Yellow Canaries seemed drawn in a shell, comfortable in the attack but concerned of going forward. Slowly EskiÅŸehirspor crept back into the match and came with a fraction of leveling in the final ten minutes. However with three minutes remaining Semih Åžentürk’s long provision to Daniel Güiza resulted in the Spanish international making it 2-0. The insurance goal was needed as just before regulation time concluded Batuhan Karadeniz, on-loan from BeÅŸiktaÅŸ, redirected Stjepan Poljak’s from close range to make it 2-1. The visitors searched for the needed equalizer in added time but it was not to be and Fenerbahçe walked away with the 2-1 victory.
