derby ends in violent, scoreless draw

By: j | April 13th, 2009

The pre-match buildup of great battle between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray failed to live up to expectations as the match concluded with a nil draw at Ali Sami Yen Stadium. However that said, while the draw left the Yellow Canaries a distant eight points behind Sivasspor the day will be remembered for endless series of poor challenges and a lengthy altercation near the matches conclusion.

Pushing aside the disciplinary problems for a moment, the overall mindset of Fenerbahçe heading into the match is a peculiar one to understand and like many issues of the campaign needs to be dissected later on. To head into a match against your heated rival, with season being on the line and then put forth a pithy fearful and undisciplined performance is dreadful. A victory would keep Fenerbahçe title hopes alive and with this in mind you would assume they would possess the claret to put “it” on the line. However they did not and instead offered little attacking vision and the entire match was relegated to denying Galatasaray a goal and a litany of tawdry challenges that are deserving of significant disciplinary action.

Sadly beyond the general run of play the match concluded with an absolute embarrassment for Süper Lig and needs to be dealt by regulatory bodies, swiftly and with the harshest of penalties. Early challenges of Emre Aşık on Robert Carlos and Selçuk Şahin on Harry Kewell should have been dealt with harsher by the referee Fırat Aydınus but unfortunately he did not and the great rivalry embarrassed itself.

Returning the match, once again attacking vision was complete ownership of Galatasaray on the day and only poor finishing and the work of Volkan Demirel saved the point. From the get-go Galatasaray with Milan Baroš provision to Harry Kewell not being closed out properly by the Australia international. Poor finishing by the hosts continued seven minutes later as Arda Turan’s splendid cross was headed wide by Milan Baroš. Moments later a poor clearance led to Harry Kewell attempting from a tight against but Volkan Demirel was up to the challenge. After a rash challenge on Robert Carlos, the match heated-up or should I say started in a spiral demise. With players jostling, handling each other a bit rough, the referee did not step-in and the misguided intensity led to the embarrassing conclusion of the day. Selçuk Şahin let his emotions spill over quickly thereafter, first on what can’t be described as a “challenge” on Mehmet Topal as he simply shoved the player over only to be followed up by a flying lunge at Harry Kewell. Drawing a yellow-card he immediately crowding the referee in a heated conversation and should have seen his day end right there and spared us his later discretion’s. A further incident occurred a few minutes later as tempers flared with Sabri Sarıoğlu grabbing Diego Lugano’s throat and the Uruguayan international deserving an early red-card for a series of provocations that eventually spilled over. The match continued with a number of threats mostly by the hosts but summarily the day won’t be remembered by the run of play but instead the brawl at the end.

The final stages which included Lugano’s head butt to Emre Aşık erupted into a long series of altercations that if not controlled by security would have erupted into a full scale riot. Emre Aşık, Arda Turan, Semih Şentürk and Diego Lugano were all red-carded and along with a few others as well as the clubs need to be dealt with harshly by Turkish Football Federation.
