a sigh of relief: Gençlerbirliği match review
By: j | September 21st, 2008Fenerbahçe supporters can breathe a sigh of relief as the Yellow Canaries defeated Gençlerbirliği 3-0 Süper Lig action today at Şükrü Saracoğlu.
Luis Aragonés noted after the match:
‘I’m not totally satisfied with my players’ performance in the first half, but in the second half they managed to do what I had told them.”
”We are just getting started. You have to consider the fact that we are a brand new team. Of course, we needed some time, and now our time has come.”
”I told our young goalkeeper Volkan Babacan how talented he is and what he is capable of achieving. I’m glad that he made a great job.”
The match started slow with opportunities on either end few and far between. However four minutes before the break a crossing volley into the box made its way to Alex who slotted to the back of the net to give the home club the lead. The goal seemed to energize Fenerbahçe as they came out with more intent after the break. Finally at the sixty-fourth minute Daniel Güiza scored on the break to give the home side a commanding 2-0 lead. Continuing to pour forward a well placed volley by Alex at the end of regulation time was headed perfectly by Kâzım Kâzım into the net to round out the scoring.
Süper Lig action continues next week against Sivasspor.
